How do you defrost turkey already been cooked?
To defrost a cooked turkey, follow these steps:
1. Check the packaging: Read the instructions on the packaging of your cooked turkey to see if there are any specific thawing instructions. Some turkeys may come with directions to thaw them in the refrigerator or at room temperature.
2. Refrigerator method (slow and safe): Place the cooked turkey in its original packaging or wrap it tightly in plastic wrap to prevent cross-contamination. Place it in the refrigerator and allow it to thaw slowly. The thawing time will depend on the size of the turkey, but it generally takes about 24 hours for every 5 pounds of weight.
3. Cold water method (faster, but requires constant attention): If you need to thaw the turkey more quickly, you can use the cold water method. Place the cooked turkey in a large sink or container filled with cold, not warm, water. Change the water every 30 minutes to ensure that it stays cold. The turkey should be completely thawed within 2-3 hours. Make sure that the turkey is completely submerged in water and that the packaging is watertight to prevent bacteria from entering the food.
4. Microwave method (fastest, but requires careful monitoring): This method should be used only as a last resort, as microwaving can result in uneven heating. Place the cooked turkey in a microwave-safe dish and microwave on the defrost setting for short intervals, checking frequently to ensure that the turkey is not overheating. Rotate the turkey throughout the process to ensure even thawing.
5. Once thawed, cook immediately: Do not refreeze a thawed cooked turkey. Once thawed, cook it thoroughly to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit as measured with a food thermometer.
