What language did sushi come from?

Sushi originated in Japan.

While the modern sushi we know and love today evolved over centuries, its roots can be traced back to Southeast Asia and the practice of fermenting fish in rice. This technique was brought to Japan by Buddhist monks in the 8th century.

Over time, the fermented fish was replaced by vinegared rice, and the focus shifted from the fermented fish itself to the flavor of the rice. This development occurred around the 18th century, ultimately leading to the sushi we know today.
