Where was sushi first made?
While the exact origin of sushi is debated, the most widely accepted theory is that sushi originated in Southeast Asia, specifically in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam, around the 7th century.
Here's why:
* Early Forms of Fermented Fish: The earliest known form of sushi, called narezushi, involved fermenting fish in rice for long periods. This method was likely developed in Southeast Asia, where rice and fermented fish were common staples.
* Spread to Japan: Narezushi eventually spread to Japan, where it was adapted and refined over time. By the 18th century, the fermentation process was shortened, and vinegar was added to the rice for a faster and more palatable result. This evolved into the sushi we know today.
While the exact origin of sushi is debated, it's clear that the concept of preserving fish in rice originated in Southeast Asia and was later refined in Japan.
