How to Eat Mussels From the Shell (7 Steps)
The proper way to eat mussels from the shell can be a bit daunting if you have never eaten them before. In an environment filled with other people, such as a fancy dinner party or in a restaurant, knowing how to eat mussels will save you from an etiquette faux pas and embarrassment. There are two accepted ways to eat mussels from the shell and both are very simple.
Things You'll Need
- Seafood or salad fork
With a Fork
-
Hold the shell firmly between the forefinger and thumb of one hand. Insert the fork between the mussel and the shell.
-
Twist the fork gently to remove the mussel meat from the shell.
-
Lift the meat, as is, to eat it without additional sauce, such as cocktail sauce.
-
Slide the fork from beneath the mussel and spear it with the tines of the fork to dip into cocktail or other sauces.
Using the Shell
-
Use a gentle back and forth motion on the top portion of the mussel shell to detach it from the bottom shell. This only needs to be done for the first mussel.
-
Hold the bottom shell with one hand and use the upper shell as a scoop to scrape the mussel from the lower section.
-
Bring the shell to your lips and allow the mussel to slide into your mouth.
