Where did Legal Seafood get its name?
Legal Sea Foods began as The Fish Net on Cambridge Street in Inman Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1950, established by four partners, George Berkowitz, Irving Rosenberg, Murray Feil, and Lester Berkowitz. In the early days, customers could pick out the fish they wanted from an ice-packed table.
During one meal service, a regular customer said “everything is legal!”. Irving quickly decided this would become their new advertising slogan and the restaurant adopted a “Legal” theme, changing signage around town and renaming the company Legal Sea Foods when incorporating in 1968.
