What is thiamine monitrate used for?

Thiamine mononitrate, also known as thiamine or Vitamin B1, is used to prevent or treat vitamin B1 deficiency particularly due to poor diet, alcoholism and malabsorption syndromes (condition where the nutrients from the food are not properly absorbed in the body). It is also given to people who have a high risk of vitamin B1 deficiency, such as those who are on dialysis, have diabetes or hyperthyroidism, or are undergoing major surgery.

Vitamin B1 is important for many functions in the body, including the production of energy, the functioning of the heart, the nervous system and for brain function. It is necessary for growth, development and general well-being. Symptoms of vitamin B1 deficiency may include fatigue, irritability, weakness, weight loss, confusion and muscle weakness.
