How do you cook quinoa?
To cook quinoa, follow these simple steps:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup quinoa
- 2 cups water or broth
- Salt, to taste
Instructions:
1. Rinse the quinoa. Place the quinoa in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse it under cold water for about 1 minute, or until the water runs clear. This removes any bitterness and helps to activate the quinoa's saponins, which are natural coating that help to protect it from pests.
2. Combine the quinoa and water in a pot. In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed quinoa and water or broth. Add a pinch of salt, or to taste.
3. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a lid, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the quinoa is tender and all of the liquid has been absorbed.
4. Fluff the quinoa and serve. Once the quinoa is cooked, remove the pot from the heat and let it sit for 5 minutes, covered. This allows the quinoa to steam and fluff up. Then, fluff the quinoa with a fork and serve it hot or cold.
Quinoa is a versatile grain and can be used in various recipes, including salads, soups, pilafs, and as a breakfast porridge.
Tips:
- To cook quinoa in a rice cooker, follow the same steps as above but use the rice cooker's water measurement for the amount of quinoa and water.
- For a more fragrant quinoa, toast it in a pan before cooking it. Heat a pan over medium heat and add the rinsed quinoa. Cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, or until the quinoa starts to turn golden brown. Then, add the water or broth and continue cooking as directed.
- Quinoa can be cooked in advance and refrigerated for later use. To do this, cook the quinoa according to the instructions, then let it cool completely. Store the cooked quinoa in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. When you're ready to eat it, reheat it in the microwave or on the stovetop.
