Types of Pasta Sauces With Tortellini

Tortellini are small pieces of pasta stuffed with cheese and sometimes meat or vegetables. They make for a filling meal no matter which type of sauce you choose. You can pair many different sauces with tortellini, creating a different taste each time you cook the meal. Find a sauce that fits with your taste preferences.

Tomato-Based Sauces

  • Tomato-based sauces are a classic pair with tortellini. Smooth sauces without a lot of large tomato chunks work best. With just tomato and a bit of salt and pepper, you'll have a nice pomodoro sauce. You can also add garlic and spices to add more flavor to the dish.

Cream-Based Sauces

  • Cream-based sauces also pair well with tortellini. Alfredo sauce is thick and creamy, which tastes good, but produces a very heavy meal. You may want to choose a lighter cream-based sauce, such as a vodka sauce.

Pesto

  • Make pesto with fresh basil, oil, pine nuts and garlic. A small bit of pesto packs a powerful punch, so start with adding just a spoonful to the pasta dish and increasing it to your taste. Pesto sauce works well when you want to create a cold tortellini salad.

Broth

  • For the lightest taste, serve your tortellini as a soup, with a broth-based sauce. You can do this when you want the tortellini to be a side dish rather than the main dish.
