How do you keep bees away from a barbecue and picnic?
To deter bees from your outdoor activities such as barbecues or picnics, you can try the following tips:
1. Strategic Food Placement: Place food and beverages in covered containers or coolers. Keep sugary drinks and uncovered foods away from the main eating area.
2. Avoid Strong Scents: Avoid wearing perfumes or colognes that have a strong floral scent. Bees are attracted to sweet fragrances.
3. Remove Trash and Debris: Keep the area clean by regularly disposing of leftover food, food wrappers, and trash.
4. Use Citronella Candles: Citronella candles emit a scent that repels some flying insects, including bees.
5. Plant Bee-Repelling Plants: Consider planting herbs or flowers around the picnic area known to repel bees, such as lemongrass, mint, or basil.
6. Water Misting: Occasionally spray a fine mist of water around the picnic area. Bees may avoid areas where there's mist.
7. Bee Traps or Decoys: You can use commercially available bee traps or create DIY versions to capture bees from a distance.
8. Provide Alternate Sources of Food: Place a small bowl of sugar water away from the main picnic or barbecue area to divert bees' attention.
9. Smoke and Fire: Some bees are sensitive to smoke. Carefully managed fire pits or smokers might help keep bees away.
10. Stay Calm: If bees are near, avoid rapid movements and stay calm. Sudden or aggressive movements can startle bees.
11. Emergency Measures: If you're allergic or concerned about severe reactions, consider carrying an epinephrine auto-injector in case of a severe allergic reaction.
Remember that while these tips can help reduce the presence of bees, it's not always possible to completely eliminate them from outdoor areas. If you're concerned or find yourself surrounded by a significant number of bees, it's best to move indoors immediately.
