How to Repel Flies at a BBQ

Flies, bees, ants and other insects are attracted to the abundance of meat and sugar present at a barbecue. Repelling the flies is a simple task but no method of insect repellent is ever 100 percent effective. Flies are abundant and highly motivated to feed, breed and deposit larva in a food-rich area. Your best efforts will repel a large number of insects but expect several to navigate the traps and barriers. Commercial products are a general necessity for repelling flies and a variety of repellents increases your chances of success.

Garbage bags
Electric zap trap
Pheromone traps

Electronic repellent
Sticky traps

Instructions

Place all of the trash in large garbage bags and tie the tops. This minimizes the amount of attractive scent released into the air. Designate a garbage area that is separate from the barbecue area to attract flies away from the people.
Place electric insect zappers and fly baits around the garbage area. The flies that are attracted to the garbage are quickly killed and prevented from entering the barbecue area.
Cover food with plastic wrap or aluminum foil to contain the smell and prevent contact with flies. The cover also holds heat on hot dishes and prevents dirt and debris from blowing onto the plate.
Add electronic insect repellents to the ends of the tables and the area around the barbecue. The devices emit a high-frequency sound that discourages insects from entering the area.
Hold the barbecue late in the day when the insects are less active. Flies are less of a nuisance during the evening and at night.
