How to make Pepper Steak

This Asian-inspired has become an American comfort food. It takes a little bit of prep work but the cooking is straightforward. Make the dish more vibrant by choosing different colored bell peppers. Serve over rice, noodles or even mashed potatoes. Another option is to tuck it into a tortilla and serve it like a fajita.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 1/4 pounds round or sirloin steak
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 jar stewed tomatoes
  • 2 chopped bell peppers
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce

Instructions

  1. Cut the beef into strips. Chop the vegetables.

  2. Brown the meat in a frying pan with a little oil.

  3. Stir in 1 cup water, the onion, garlic salt and ginger. Heat to boiling. Reduce the heat, cover and simmer 12 to 15 minutes. While the dish is simmering, prepare any side dishes for the meal. Add the bell pepper and tomatoes during the last 5 minutes of simmering.

  4. Blend the cornstarch, sugar and soy sauce. Stir it into the beef mixture. Cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens to the desired consistency. Serve as desired.
