How to Make Turkey Jerky in a Dehydrator
Do your kids like jerky as a snack after school? Or do you take it with you when you go backpacking? Jerky is a convenient, high-protein snack to have on hand all the time.
If you don't like beef jerky or are trying to cut back on red meat, you can make tasty turkey jerky in your dehydrator.
Things You'll Need
- Food dehydrator
- 3 lbs turkey breast (to make about 1 lb of jerky)
- 2/3 cup Worcestershire sauce
- 2/3 cup soy sauce
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- Large bowl with lid (or zip closure bags)
Making Turkey Jerky
-
Remove the skin, bones and all visible fat from the turkey.
-
Slice the turkey about 1/8-inch thick with the grain of the meat.
-
Mix Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce and spices in a large bowl or zip closure bag.
-
Add the meat and mix well.
-
Let it marinate for four to six hours or overnight in the refrigerator. Mix the meat and marinade from time to time to make sure the meat gets well marinated.
-
Drain the meat well, and pat it dry. You want it to be as dry as possible when it goes into the dehydrator.
-
Lay the meat on the dehydrator racks in a single layer, following the manufacturer's instructions.
-
Dehydrate for the time recommended in your manufacturer's instructions. If you've lost the instructions, you might be able to find them online. The jerky is done when it is firm and dry. It should not be spongy. If it is brittle and breaks easily, it is overdone.
