What Types of Fish Are Low in Fat?

Fish is a nutritious food, and some types of fish are naturally low in fat. By baking, grilling, steaming or broiling low-fat fish, you can enjoy a healthy meal full of protein. Some low-fat fish are farmed by aquaculture companies, while others are caught in open waters by commercial fishermen.

Tilapia

  • Tilapia is one of the most low-fat fish available. Most tilapia is farmed in ponds or tanks. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), a 100-gram serving of tilapia has just 2.65 grams of fat when cooked with dry heat. Most of the tilapia farms in the U.S. are located in Florida, Southern California and Hawaii.

Trout

  • Trout is low in fat and frequently farmed. The USDA reports that a 100-gram serving of farmed trout has 7.2 grams of fat when steamed, baked, broiled or grilled. Rainbow trout is a hardy breed, and most fish farmers choose this species to cultivate.

Haddock

  • Haddock is a saltwater fish. The USDA calculates that the fat content of haddock is less than 1% of its total weight, making it one of the most low-fat forms of protein available. Haddock is found in deeper waters and caught in the wild by commercial fishing operators.
