Why is an avocado green?

The green color of an avocado is due to the presence of chlorophyll, the same pigment that makes leaves green.

Here's why:

* Photosynthesis: Avocados, like other plants, use chlorophyll to capture sunlight and convert it into energy through photosynthesis. Chlorophyll absorbs red and blue wavelengths of light, reflecting green wavelengths, which is why we see avocados as green.

* Ripening Process: As an avocado ripens, its chlorophyll breaks down, and the fruit transitions from green to brown. This is why ripe avocados can have a darker green or even a slightly brownish hue.

While other pigments also contribute to the avocado's color, chlorophyll is the dominant pigment responsible for its green appearance.
