When were tea cups invented?
Tea cups and saucers first made their appearance during the Tang dynasty (618-907 AD) in China. Before this, tea was primarily consumed from bowls. The saucer was originally intended as a means to protect the table from spills and allow tea to cool, as it was often drunk hot. In this early incarnation, the cup would rest within the saucer rather than being placed on it.
