Juice It Up

• Since grenadine derives much of its flavor from pomegranates, it makes sense to use pomegranate juice as a substitute. A wide variety of options are available for pomegranate juice including unsweetened versions and those mixed with other fruit juices like cherry or blueberry. Unsweetened pomegranate juice is a perfect alternative for those who consider grenadine to be too sweet. Similarly, a variety of cranberry juice cocktail concentrates are readily available, ranging from bottled juices to frozen cans. Frozen cranberry concentrates can be diluted with water. Both pomegranate and cranberry juices can be found at most grocery stores.

Pomegranate Molasses

• Pomegranate molasses is a thick and syrupy pomegranate juice reduction that possesses a tart flavor with a slightly sweet edge. It can be diluted with water to create a less intense flavor ideal for everything from drinks to marinades. While not as readily available as grenadine or pomegranate juice, it can typically be found in some gourmet markets as well as at Middle Eastern grocers.

Sweet Syrups

• Berry-flavored syrups -- like maraschino and raspberry syrup -- can be used in lieu of grenadine. Maraschino syrup is a sweet, cherry-flavored syrup that is readily available in many liquor and grocery stores or can be made at home using fresh sweet cherries. Raspberry syrup is a sweet, tart raspberry-flavored syrup that can be either made at home using fresh raspberries or purchased at many grocery and liquor stores.

Lovely Liqueurs

• Made from wild marasca cherries, maraschino liqueur is a cherry-flavored Italian liqueur that can be used in lieu of grenadine. Crème de cassis is a liqueur flavored with black currants. Black currants possess a deep, earthy flavor reminiscent of that of blackberries. Crème de cassis can be found at most liquor stores.
