How to Make a Rye Sidecar
A rye sidecar is a fresh, new take on a classic bar cocktail. Legend has it that the original sidecar, made with brandy and a splash of orange, was invented at Harry McElhone's legendary New York Bar in Paris, France. It is said that he invented it for a regular customer who often arrived at the bar in the sidecar of a motorcycle driven by his chauffeur. This recipe makes two rye sidecars, though it can be halved if you are only making one drink.
Things You'll Need
- Cocktail shaker with strainer
- Crushed ice
- 4 oz. rye whiskey
- 2 oz. Cointreau liqueur
- 2 oz. freshly squeezed lemon juice
- Orange zest
Instructions
-
Half-fill a cocktail shaker with crushed ice. Pour in the rye whiskey, Cointreau liqueur and freshly squeezed lemon juice.
-
Replace the cap on the cocktail shaker and shake vigorously for 15 seconds. You do not have to worry about bruising the alcohol.
-
Using the strainer, transfer the drinks into two old-fashioned or sours glasses half-filled with ice cubes.
-
Garnish each drink with a bit of orange zest. Serve immediately.
