What are charger plates?

A charger plate, also known as an underplate, service plate, or presentation plate, is a large decorative plate placed beneath a dinner plate. Charger plates serve several purposes:

1. Decoration: Charger plates add a layer of sophistication and formality to a table setting. They can enhance the visual appeal of the table and create a cohesive theme for the event.

2. Protection: Charger plates protect the tablecloth or table surface from scratches, crumbs, and spills.

3. Style: Charger plates come in various materials, designs, and colors, providing an opportunity to introduce different styles and patterns to the table setting.

4. Placeholder: Before the meal begins, the charger plate serves as a placeholder for the dinner plate. Once the meal is served, the dinner plate is placed on top of the charger plate.

Charger plates are typically larger than dinner plates and usually measure between 12 and 14 inches in diameter. They are not intended to be used for eating and are removed before the meal begins. While charger plates are commonly used in formal dining settings, they can also be incorporated into more casual setups to add a touch of elegance.
