Can you put a cake in the fridge to cool it off?

Yes. Cooling the cake in the refrigerator is recommended especially when frosting it. The frosting goes onto a cold cake much easier and cleaner than onto a warm cake that you have just pulled from the oven. The cake will also be able to hold the frosting better and you won't end up with a warm cake with melted frosting.
