How to Ice a Cupcake Cake
Making a homemade cupcake cake is a lot of fun. There are many ways to decorate this kind of cake. Before the decorating can begin, icing the cupcake cake has to be done. Follow these tips to help you ice a cupcake cake.
Things You'll Need
- icing
- spatula
- decorators bag
- star tip #22
- writing tip
- cake platter
Instructions
-
Arrange the cupcakes on a cake platter close together. Once the cupcakes are in their proper order, dab a dot of icing under each cupcake to keep them from moving while you ice the cupcake cake.
-
Now take the spatula or a smooth knife (a butterknife is fine) and the frosting. When you frost, remember to frost in one direction only, with a sweeping motion. Make sure to cover all the gaps in between each cupcake to make it look more like a regular cake.
-
Another option is to use a decorator's bag. Take a cup of icing and put it into the bag. An easy way to do this is to place the bag in a tall glass and roll the bag down to make a cuff. Now fill with the icing and twist the top of the bag to close. Squeeze out some of the icing to rid the bag of any air pockets.
-
When using the decorators bag, a star tip (tip #22) is usually preferred. To make a star, gently squeeze the bag until the star has been formed, stop squeezing then just lift the bag straight up. Continue with this process until the whole cake has been filled. Always ice the cake in one direction only.
-
A writing tip can also be used to make any outlines or to write a message on the cupcake cake if needed. If you do not have a writing tip, then use a zipper bag. Just fill the zipper bag with icing, cut the tip of the bag with scissors and write.
