How to Clean Ginger

Ginger, a versatile spice, adds heat and flavor to a variety of dishes and drinks. Whether it's sliced, diced, pickled, grated or pureed, ginger must first be cleaned before it can be consumed due to its skin being extremely tough, fibrous and pretty much inedible. Cleaning ginger is a relatively simple and painless process, meaning you will soon be on your way to firing up your taste buds.

Things You'll Need

  • Vegetable scrubber
  • Spoon

Instructions

  1. Snap off a bulb of ginger from the knob or the larger ginger root, lightly shake any excess debris from it, then hold the ginger bulb firmly between your thumb and fingers.

  2. Turn on the cold water in the kitchen sink. Place the ginger knob under the water, then lightly brush it with a vegetable scrubber. Remove the rinsed ginger knob from the stream, then turn off the faucet.

  3. Grasp a spoon in one hand and the ginger in the other, then place the head of the spoon against the top part of the bulb, its concave side facing the ginger. Pull the spoon towards you across the ginger, scraping the skin from the ginger as the spoon moves over it. Repeat until the ginger is completely peeled.
