What are some easy science experiements to do at home?
Easy Science Experiments at Home:
For the Little Ones (Ages 4-8):
* Rainbow in a Jar:
* Fill a jar with water and add a few drops of food coloring in different colors.
* Gently add a tablespoon of vegetable oil.
* Watch as the oil floats to the top and the colors separate!
* Magic Milk:
* Pour milk into a shallow dish.
* Add a drop of each food coloring.
* Dip a cotton swab in dish soap and touch the surface of the milk.
* Observe the colors swirl and dance.
* Sink or Float:
* Collect various household objects (toy cars, cork, coins, etc.).
* Fill a large bowl with water.
* Have your child predict whether each object will sink or float before dropping it in.
* DIY Lava Lamp:
* Fill a clear bottle with water.
* Add a few drops of food coloring.
* Fill a small jar with vegetable oil and add a few drops of food coloring.
* Pour the oil mixture into the water bottle.
* Observe the "lava" flowing up and down!
For Older Kids (Ages 8-12):
* Walking Water:
* Line up clear glasses filled with water in a row.
* Add a different food coloring to each glass.
* Cut strips of paper towel and attach one end in the water of one glass and the other end in the water of the next glass.
* Watch as the water "walks" from one glass to the next.
* Crystal Growing:
* Dissolve salt or sugar in hot water.
* Slowly cool the solution and let it sit overnight.
* Observe the crystals that grow on the bottom and sides of the container.
* Erupting Volcano:
* Create a volcano model with clay or playdough.
* Place baking soda in the "crater" and add a few drops of dish soap.
* Pour vinegar into the "crater" and watch the eruption!
* Salt Crystal Geodes:
* Mix salt and water until it is a thick paste.
* Press the paste into a balloon and leave to dry.
* Once dried, pop the balloon and you will have a geode.
For Teens and Adults:
* Homemade Slime:
* Mix glue, borax solution, and food coloring.
* Experiment with different ratios to change the consistency.
* Elephant Toothpaste:
* Combine hydrogen peroxide, dish soap, and food coloring.
* Add a little yeast and watch the foam eruption!
* DIY Battery:
* Create a simple circuit using a potato, copper and zinc strips, and LED lights.
* Density Tower:
* Layer different liquids of varying densities in a tall glass.
* Try honey, dish soap, water, and vegetable oil.
Remember:
* Always supervise young children during science experiments.
* Use safety goggles and gloves when handling chemicals.
* Have fun experimenting and learning about science!
