How to Remove Burnt-On Food From a Crock-Pot

Cleaning a slow cooker is normally a straightforward task. Because the food in a Crock-Pot cooks at a low temperature and maintains its moisture, burning is unlikely. Normally, you just wait for the unit to cool, remove the stoneware insert, if applicable, and wash it with hot, soapy water. The insert can even go in the dishwasher. However, you may get an occasional stubborn, caked-on stain that won't come off with the usual cleaning methods. Make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning first. If that fails, try each of these methods in turn.

Things You'll Need

Liquid detergent
Sponge or rubber spatula
6 antacid tablets
Liquid fabric softener

Rubber gloves
Oven cleaner
Heavy-duty garbage bag

Instructions

Fill the Crock-Pot with water and a few squirts of liquid detergent. Make sure the burnt-on areas are immersed. Turn the unit on high and leave it for an hour. Empty the unit and scrape the stain off with a sponge or rubber spatula.
Fill your Crock-Pot with water and add six antacid tablets. Let it sit for an hour, then try and scrape the burnt-on bits with a sponge or rubber spatula.
Fill your Crock-Pot with water and add a squirt of liquid fabric softener. Let it sit for an hour, then try and scrape off the stain with a sponge or rubber spatula.
Put on rubber gloves, and spray oven cleaner on the burnt-on mess. Place the Crock-Pot insert in a heavy-duty garbage bag, close it tightly and leave it to work overnight. Open it outdoors the next day, being careful to avoid the dangerous fumes. Use the rubber gloves to remove the mess then clean the insert thoroughly with regular dish soap.
