How do you make Swedish mustard?
Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup yellow mustard seeds
- 1/4 cup brown mustard seeds
- 1 tablespoon ground allspice
- 1 tablespoon ground coriander
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup white vinegar
- 1/4 cup water
Instructions:
1. In a large bowl, combine the mustard seeds, allspice, coriander, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, and salt.
2. In a small saucepan, bring the vinegar and water to a boil.
3. Pour the hot vinegar mixture over the mustard seed mixture.
4. Stir until the mustard seeds are evenly coated.
5. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it sit in a warm place for 24 hours.
6. After 24 hours, stir the mustard and transfer it to a clean glass jar.
7. Seal the jar and store it in a cool, dark place for at least 2 weeks before using.
Tips:
- To make a smoother mustard, you can strain it through a fine mesh sieve before storing it.
- Swedish mustard is traditionally served with herring, but it can also be used as a condiment for sandwiches, hot dogs, and brats.
