How to Heat Canned Food With a Campfire (7 Steps)

When you're out camping, you have to cook meals, and one easy way to cook and not have to pack lots of extra pots that might get scorched from cooking over an open fire is to use the cans that the food comes in to heat it. When you're done, you can just throw the can away.

Things You'll Need

  • Wood for campfire
  • Kindling
  • Matches or lighter
  • Canned Food
  • Can Opener
  • Hot pads

Heating Food with a Campfire

  1. Get the fire going by using the kindling and match or lighter.

  2. Add larger pieces of wood, and let it burn down to a manageable size and there are plenty of coals to cook with.

  3. Take the label off the can of food and discard it.

  4. Open the can and leave the lid attached enough so that you can close it to keep the soot out of the can while it cooks.

  5. Set the can on the edge of the fire, so it is close to the coals, but not directly on them.

  6. Stir the food when it starts to bubble to make sure that it all gets heated.

  7. Using the hot pads, carefully lift the can from the fire, and serve.
