Cucumbers provide a refreshing and nutritious option and fast preparation. Cutting a cucumber into fancy designs requires simple knife techniques and a bit of creativity for a gourmet appearance. Things You'll Need

  • Water
  • Paper towels
  • Cutting board
  • Chef's knife
  • Paring knife

Instructions

  1. Wash the cucumbers under cold water. Rub dirt off the cucumbers and pat the cucumbers dry with a paper towel.

  2. Place the cucumbers horizontally on a cutting board. Cut both tips off the cucumbers with a chef's knife. Slice the cucumbers into 1/4-inch thick rounds down the length of the cucumbers.

  3. Stack three to four cucumber rounds on top of each other and cut them vertically into 1/8-inch wide pieces to create fancy slices for topping salads or garnishing dishes.

  4. Place a small cookie cutter into the flesh of cucumber rounds to make fancy shapes or cut triangular slits around the circumference of cucumber rounds with a paring knife for vegetable trays.

  5. Cut 1/4-inch thick cucumber rounds into 1/8-inch thick rounds. Cut a slit from one edge of the cucumber rounds to the center of the rounds. Twist the top half of the round counterclockwise and the bottom half clockwise to create a spiral. Skewer the spiral cucumber with a cocktail pick to retain the fancy shape and place it in a drink.
