Baking Soft Eggs at Low Temperatures
Many a cook dreams of a perfect soft-cooked egg, with its silky smooth yet firm egg white and completely runny yolk. A soft-cooked egg is perfect as a dip for toast or a sauce for other ingredients on the plate. Baking, rather than boiling, may be the best technique. Cook them in their own shells or in a baking dish, along with a variety of flavorings.
Whole Eggs
-
Bake eggs to soft perfection in their own shells. Place the eggs in a square baking dish and cover them with water. Keeping the water from boiling, using a low and slow technique, is key to this method of baking soft eggs. Do not allow your oven's temperature to rise above 300 degrees Fahrenheit, and bake for between 30 to 45 minutes for optimum results.
Baking Dish
-
Crack eggs into a baking dish, keeping the yolks whole, and bake for 10 to 15 minutes at 325 degrees Fahrenheit. This is one of the quickest options for baking soft eggs, but requires that you keep a close watch to ensure that they remain soft. Cover the eggs with foil or use an additional ingredient, such as thinly sliced tomatoes or a layer of cheese, while cooking to keep the eggs soft. To ensure that eggs do not stick, coat the inside of the dish with oil or butter. This method allows for a large batch of eggs to be cooked at once, and works well with a variety of seasonings.
Hot Water Bath
-
Cook egg-filled ramekins in a hot water bath for the best soft egg results. This method allows the heat to slowly permeate through the eggs, as the water heats up at the same time the eggs do. Preheat the oven to your desired temperature and set the ramekins in a baking dish. Fill the large dish with water so it reaches 3/4 of the way up the sides of the small, individual ramekins. Crack individual eggs into each and sprinkle with spices or herbs, if desired. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes.
Flavoring
-
Baking eggs lends itself to a variety of flavor options. Whisk minced fresh herbs into the eggs or sprinkle dried herbs on top. Caramelize onions and garlic, or pan fry other vegetables, before adding them to the eggs. Keep the yolks whole as you gently place them in the dishes. Sprinkle cheese on top and broil on high for one to two minutes to add a rich flavor and crunchy texture to the top of the eggs.
