How to Cook a Patty Without a Grill (9 Steps)
Hamburgers are a staple of the summer grilling season. Along with steaks, ribs, and hot dogs, it's common to see hamburger patties on the racks of gas and charcoal grills during family picnics and backyard barbecues. However, bad weather or lack of a grill does not mean that you have to forgo this quick meal. There are even pans that you can use on your stovetop that mimic the effects of grilling. Also, keep in mind that you can use other meats besides beef -- and even fish, vegetables or beans -- to make your patties.
Things You'll Need
- Large skillet
- Spray vegetable oil
- Patties
- Seasonings
- Spatula
- Instant-read thermometer
- Broiler pan
Pan-Seared Skillet Patties
-
Place a large skillet on the stove. Lightly coat the surface of the skillet with spray vegetable oil. Preheat the skillet on medium heat.
-
Make your patties from beef, turkey, lamb, salmon or whatever your recipe indicates. Lightly season the surface of the patties, using salt, ground black pepper, or seasonings of your choice.
-
Place the patties in the skillet, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Cook the patties for about five minutes, and then flip them using the spatula.
-
Cook the patties for another five minutes. Use an instant-read thermometer to check the internal temperature of the patties. Cook beef, veal, pork and lamb patties to at least 160 degrees Fahrenheit, chicken and turkey to 165 degrees F, and salmon patties to 145 degrees F. Cook vegetable or bean patties until they are cooked through. Remove the patties from the pan and allow meat patties to rest a few minutes before serving to seal in the juices. Place the patties on buns or on a plate.
Broiled Patties
-
Preheat the oven's broiler to low, with the rack about 4 inches below the heating element. Lightly coat the surface of a broiler pan with spray vegetable oil.
-
Lightly season the surface of the patties and place on the broiler pan. Place the broiler pan into the oven.
-
Cook the patties for about five minutes. Remove the broiler pan from oven and flip the patties using a spatula.
-
Return the broiler pan to the oven and cook for another five minutes. Check the internal temperature of the patties using the instant-read thermometer. Cook beef, veal, pork and lamb patties to at least 160 degrees Fahrenheit, chicken and turkey to 165 degrees F, and salmon patties to 145 degrees F. Cook vegetable or bean patties until they are cooked through.
-
Remove the broiler pan from the oven and begin dressing the patties. Allow the meat patties to rest a few minutes before serving to seal in the juices.
