How to Cook a Poached Tilapia Fillet

There are several ways to cook fish, but one of the healthiest ways is to poach it. In addition to being healthy, poaching fish can enhance basic flavors and allow versatility in method. If you're looking to poach a tilapia fillet, there are a few simple steps you can follow to create a tasty and healthy poached fish.

Things You'll Need

  • Tilapia fillet
  • Liquid of your choice
  • Seasonings of your choice
  • Medium to large sized pan

Instructions

  1. Decide on a poaching liquid. This can be any liquid from water to wine to lemon juice, but you will need enough of the liquid to almost cover a tilapia fillet. Melted butter may be used, but this will decrease the level of healthiness associated with your poached tilapia.

  2. Fill your cooking pan with the liquid. Bring your liquid almost to a boil, but do not allow the liquid to reach the boiling point. You may add any spices or seasonings to the liquid that you'd like. Common additions may include lemon zest, garlic powder or herbs such as parsley and basil.

  3. Place the tilapia into the liquid. The liquid should not completely cover the fish, but should surround the fish's sides.

  4. Check the fish often until it is white in color and flaky. If you can easily flake off the tilapia with a fork, it is done.

  5. Remove the tilapia from the pan, and discard the liquid used for poaching.
