How to Make French Toast Using Banana Instead of Eggs
Classic French toast, with its sweet, cinnamon-sugar taste and soft, egg-soaked middle, is a weekend breakfast staple in many households. However, for vegans and others who don't consume eggs, traditional French toast is impossible to indulge in. Fortunately, the egg-free community is resourceful and have learned to adapt this breakfast favorite with alternative options. This includes a banana-based batter, which results in an equally tasty French toast with a strong banana flavor.
Things You'll Need
- Mixing bowl
- Banana
- Milk (traditional, soy, rice or almond)
- Flour
- Vanilla
- Cinnamon
- Nutmeg
- Wire whisk
- Dense bread (Italian, sourdough)
- Bread knife
- Cooking spray or oil
- Skillet or griddle pan
- Spatula
Instructions
-
Mash a ripe banana well in a shallow bowl. For two servings, whisk in about a 1/2 cup of milk, a tablespoon of flour and vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg to taste. Use a wire whisk to stir the batter together until there are no lumps and the ingredients are well combined.
-
Slice a dense, spongy bread into 3/4-inch to1-inch thick slices. The best French toast uses thick-sliced bread that will hold together when soaked in batter and during cooking. If you require egg-free bread, traditional Italian, French and sourdough loaves are ideal.
-
Spray a griddle pan or skillet lightly with cooking spray or coat with a little oil and place on the stove over medium heat.
-
Dip the bread slices into the batter, letting each one sit in the batter for about one to two minutes on both sides. The thicker the slice, the longer it should soak in the batter.
-
Place the dipped bread onto the hot skillet and cook for two to three minutes, until the side touching the griddle is lightly browned. Flip over with a spatula and repeat on the other side, cooking until browned. Serve hot.
