How is bolection moulding done?

Bolection molding is a woodworking technique that involves adding a raised molding around the edges of a panel, frame, or other object. It is commonly used in furniture, cabinetry, and architectural millwork. Here are the steps involved in creating bolection molding:

1. Select the molding profile: Choose the desired profile for the molding, such as ogee, cove, or bullnose.

2. Prepare the molding board: Cut the molding board to the appropriate dimensions, ensuring that it is slightly wider and longer than the panel or frame it will be applied to.

3. Shape the molding: Use a router, shaper, or hand tools to cut the desired profile into the molding board.

4. Miter the corners: If the molding will be used for a frame or panel with corners, carefully miter the ends of the molding at a 45-degree angle.

5. Attach the molding: Apply wood glue to the back of the molding and firmly press it into place around the panel or frame. Secure it with brad nails or screws, ensuring that the nails or screws are not driven through the face of the molding.

6. Fill any gaps: Use wood filler or caulk to fill any gaps between the molding and the panel or frame. Sand smooth if necessary.

7. Apply finish: Apply a stain or paint to the molding to match the desired finish of your project.
