How to Thaw a Frozen Halibut (4 Steps)
Halibut is a type of white fish with a mild flavor, making it a versatile ingredient because it can pair well with other strong flavors without making an overwhelming dish. If you don't live near a source of fresh halibut, you can purchase the fish frozen. The way you thaw frozen halibut can directly affect the texture and taste of the fish. If you thaw frozen halibut too quickly, it can lose some of its flavor and become bland or overly soft. Patient, gentle thawing can help ensure the halibut reverts closely back to its original state.
Things You'll Need
- Gallon-sized plastic food storage bag
- Large bowl
- Paper towels
Instructions
-
Place your frozen halibut directly into a gallon-sized plastic food storage bag. Squeeze all of the excess air out of the bag, then close it tightly.
-
Set the bag of frozen halibut directly into the bottom of a large bowl. Fill the bowl with enough cold water to completely cover the bag of frozen halibut.
-
Transfer the bowl of water and halibut into your refrigerator. Leave the fish undisturbed to thaw in the refrigerator for around two to three hours or even overnight.
-
Remove the bag of thawed halibut from the bowl of water and pour out the water into the sink. Take the thawed halibut out of the plastic food storage bag. Pat the halibut with paper towels in case any water leaked onto the fish.
