How Can I Make a Small Batch of Fondant for Decorations?
Fondant gives a decorated cake a smooth and shiny surface, and fondant decorations add interest and details to the cake. These decorations, which can range from flowers to cartoon characters, add another dimension to the cake. Making a large batch of fondant may seem wasteful when you only need a small amount to create your decorations. Creating your own batch of fondant at home will save you money when compared to purchasing store-bought fondant icing.
Things You'll Need
- 1 tbsp. water
- 1 cup mini marshmallows
- Microwave-safe bowl
- Vegetable shortening
- Wooden spoon
- 1 1/2 cups sifted powdered sugar
- Food coloring paste
Instructions
-
Combine the water with the mini marshmallows in a microwave-safe bowl.
-
Heat the mixture for 20 to 30 seconds in the microwave.
-
Stir the mixture with a greased wooden spoon until it has a syrup-like texture.
-
Microwave the fondant for 10-second intervals until it reaches the desired consistency and no lumps remain.
-
Add the sifted powdered sugar to the mixture.
-
Add two to three drops food coloring paste to the fondant at a time.
-
Stir the fondant and continue to add food coloring paste until you reach the desired shade.
-
Coat your hands with vegetable shortening and remove the fondant from the bowl.
-
Apply vegetable shortening onto a clean surface.
-
Knead the fondant until it has a smooth and pliable consistency.
-
Apply shortening to the outside of the fondant to prevent it from sticking and create decorations for the cake.
