How to Bake Chia Eggs (4 Steps)

If you have an egg allergy or run out of eggs when baking, try using chia eggs. Chia eggs are a mixture of water and ground chia seeds that form a gel. The gel acts as a flavorless binder, which you can bake the same way an egg in your favorite bread, cake and muffin recipes. Chia seeds have many nutritional benefits with a high concentration of antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids and fiber. Adding chia eggs to your baked goods is an excellent way to give them a healthy boost.

Things You'll Need

  • Coffee grinder, dry blender or food processor
  • Chia seeds
  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk

Making and Baking Chia Eggs

  1. Place the chia seeds in your coffee grinder, dry blender or food processor. Press the pulse button on the machine until the seeds are ground into a fine powder.

  2. Transfer the ground chia seeds to your mixing bowl. Add the water to the bowl and stir using a whisk to combine. Use 1 part chia seeds to 3 parts water to create 1 chia egg.

  3. Allow the chia and water mixture to sit at room temperature for 5 to 10 minutes, until it takes on the consistency of a gel.

  4. Substitute 1 chia egg for each egg used in your desired recipe. Bake at the same temperature and for the same amount of time required as you would when using a regular egg.
