What Are the Ingredients in Sugar Twin?
Sugar Twin is a brand of artificial sweetener sold in North America. It is sold in packets, tablets and powder form. People who use Sugar Twin may want to cut down on their sugar intake, reduce their caloric intake or may be diabetic and need to use a sweetener that does not increase their blood glucose level. Sugar Twin has relatively few ingredients.
Sweetener
-
The main sweetener in Sugar Twin is saccharin, which is an artificial sweetener that has been used in the place of sugar in foods for more than 100 years. It was accidentally discovered in a laboratory when a scientist spilled several chemicals on himself. It is considered to be one of the safest artificial sweeteners because it is also the most studied, having been a part of more than 30 human studies.
Other Ingredients
-
Other ingredients in Sugar Twin include dextrose, which is a type of sugar, along with artificial flavor. While Sugar Twin does contain a small amount of dextrose, it still has zero calories per serving. However, the amount of dextrose also gives 1/2 gm of carbohydrates per serving, which is one packet.
Flavors
-
Sugar Twin comes in two other flavors, granulated white and granulated brown. The granulated white has maltodextrin in the place of dextrose along with calcium chloride, while the brown granulated Sugar Twin contains maltodextrin, calcium chloride, caramel color and artificial flavor.
Canada
-
Sugar Twin is also sold in Canada, but without saccharine. Instead, sodium cyclamate is used. Many artificial sweeteners sold in Canada contain cyclamates, but cyclamate is banned in the United States. Cyclamates are banned because a 1969 study found that cyclamate may cause bladder cancer in rats. Liquid Sugar Twin is also sold in Canada, which contains water, sodium cyclamate, bonzoic acid and methyl parabin.
