Substitutes for Biscuit Mix
Biscuits make for a tasty breakfast and are relatively simple to bake. However, if you prefer to use fresher ingredients, you can substitute boxed biscuit mix with a made-from-scratch recipe. Whether you are looking to lose weight, stick to a raw or gluten-free diet, or you simply enjoy the baking process, plenty of biscuit mix substitutes are available.
Scratch Biscuits
-
While using store-bought biscuit mix is the least time-consuming way to make biscuits, you may prefer to use fresh ingredients and make biscuits from scratch. In this case, simply mix 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder, 1/2 tsp. salt and 1 tbsp. vegetable shortening to create a substitute for biscuit mix. Follow your recipe to add any additional ingredients to create a tasty biscuit without the boxed biscuit mix.
Gluten-free Biscuits
-
If you have a gluten allergy, you definitely want to stay away from biscuit mix. Instead, make your own gluten-free mixture from scratch by combining 1 cup brown rice flour, 1 cup sorghum flour, 1 cup white rice flour, 1 cup sweet rice flour, 1/2 cup corn starch, 1/2 cup potato starch, 1/4 cup millet flour, 5 tbsp. potato flour per cup and 5 tbsp. xanthan gum. With your substitute mixture, combine the rest of the usual biscuit ingredients.
Raw Biscuits
-
Food can lose some nutrients when heated, which is why some people choose to eat a raw diet to take advantage of nutrients found in uncooked food. Eating raw often involves a food processor, but can also save you time from baking. One substitute for biscuit mix is to make raw biscuits using 1 cup raw almonds, 1 cup shredded coconut, 3/4 cup of dates, 1 tbsp. sea salt and a 1`-inch piece of grated ginger. Combine the mixture in the food processor, roll into balls and refrigerate for several hours before eating.
Baby Biscuits
-
Baby biscuits, or teething biscuits, work well for babies who are teething. However, if you don't want to feed your baby an average biscuit made with biscuit mix, make a healthier alternative by combining 1 cup flour, 1 cup dry infant rice cereal, bananas, ice water and 3 tbsp. cooking oil. Form little biscuits with your hands and bake for 10 to 12 minutes on a cooking sheet.
