How to Tell if Expired Baking Powder Is Still Viable
Baking powder is the leavening agent that gives the rise and fluffiness to your baked goods. Even when stored in a cool, dry place as directed, it is sensitive to the moisture and humidity in your home and will lose its effectiveness within 6 to 12 months. Test your baking powder to make sure it is still viable before using it in baking.
Things You'll Need
- 1/2 cup hot water
- 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
- Spoon
- Bowl
Instructions
-
Pour 1/2 cup hot water into a bowl.
-
Stir 1/4 teaspoon baking powder into the water.
-
Observe the reaction. Active baking powder will bubble immediately. If there are just a few bubbles, it's losing its effectiveness. If there is no bubbling, the baking powder will not give your baked goods a rise.
