What is the eggshell made up of?
An eggshell is made up of three main layers:
1. The outer layer (cuticle): This is a thin, waxy coating that protects the shell from bacteria and other contaminants.
2. The middle layer (spongy layer): This layer is made up of calcium carbonate crystals arranged in a honeycomb-like structure. It provides strength and rigidity to the shell.
3. The inner layer (mammillary layer): This layer is made up of tightly packed calcium carbonate crystals that are arranged in a cone-like structure. It provides a smooth, protective surface for the developing embryo.
The composition of the eggshell:
* Calcium carbonate (CaCO3): This is the main component of the eggshell, accounting for around 95% of its weight.
* Organic matter: This includes proteins, pigments, and other organic molecules.
* Water: The eggshell contains a small amount of water.
Interesting facts about eggshells:
* The color of an eggshell is determined by the breed of chicken.
* Eggshells are porous and allow for gas exchange between the embryo and the outside environment.
* Eggshells can be recycled and used for a variety of purposes, such as making fertilizer, animal feed, and even building materials.
