How do know of your goldfish is making eggs?
Signs of Goldfish Making Eggs:
1. Body Shape Changes: Female goldfish may appear plumper and rounder as their bellies swell with developing eggs. This fullness is especially noticeable just in front of the vent (the small opening near the tail where waste exits the body).
2. Increase in Size and Activity: Gravid females may also grow larger overall and become more active, swimming around constantly as if searching for suitable spawning sites.
3. Egg Tube Protrusion: A female goldfish ready to lay eggs will develop a small tube or papilla near the vent. This is the ovipositor, which will help the eggs exit the body.
4. Chasing and Nudging Behavior: Male goldfish will often chase and nudge the female, nudging her belly to encourage the release of eggs during spawning.
5. Presence of Male Goldfish: Spawning usually involves both a female carrying eggs and one or more males actively courting and pursuing her.
6. Searching for Spawning Sites: Female goldfish may seek out and rest near potential spawning sites, such as plants or decorations with fine leaves or fibers where the eggs can be attached and protected.
Additional Notes:
- Goldfish typically spawn in spring or summer when the water temperature is warmer.
- The female will release her eggs into the water, and the males will fertilize them.
- Female goldfish can lay several batches of eggs throughout the season.
- The eggs will hatch into fry (baby goldfish) within a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on the water temperature.
