How to Bake Hamburger Buns (9 Steps)
Most of us take the time to make our hamburgers from scratch, but then we use buns purchased from the store. It is rewarding to make hamburger buns yourself. Making hamburger buns sounds daunting, but it is quite easy and only requires a few basic ingredients.
Things You'll Need
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1/3 cup wheat germ
- 2 packages active dry yeast
- 2 tsp. salt
- 2 cups milk
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup vegetable shortening
- Mixing bowl
- Saucepan
- Large bowl
- Plastic wrap
- Baking sheets
Instructions

Combine the following ingredients in a mixing bowl: 1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 1/2 cups of wheat flour, wheat germ, salt and yeast.

Over medium heat, melt the shortening in a saucepan. Once the shortening has melted, add the milk and sugar. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved and then remove from the heat.

Pour the contents of the saucepan to the mixing bowl and mix with an electric mixer.

Add the rest of the all-purpose flour and the rest of the wheat flour. Mix until all of the ingredients are combined and the dough has pulled away from the sides of the mixing bowl.

Knead the dough.

Set the dough in a large bowl and cover it with plastic wrap. Set it aside and wait for the dough to rise. This can take up to two hours.

Separate the dough in to 16 pieces and work them into circles.

Set the dough balls on a greased baking sheet. Let the dough balls rise for about an hour, until the sides of the dough balls begin to touch.

Set the hamburger buns in a preheated oven at 350 degrees F. Bake the buns for 20 minutes. Let the buns cool before slicing them open for hamburgers.
