Why is a tomato called tomato?
Tomato comes from the Nahuatl word "tomatl," which means "plump or swollen fruit." The Spanish conquerors of Mexico introduced the tomato to Europe, where it was called "tomate" in Spanish and Portuguese and "tomato" in Italian. By the early 17th century, the word "tomato" was being used in English.
