How do you tell when mangos are ripe?
Smell:
- Sniff the stem end of the mango. A ripe mango will have a sweet, fruity aroma. Avoid mangoes with no scent or musty smell.
Touch:
- Gently squeeze the mango. It should give to slight pressure, like a ripe avocado or peach. Avoid rock-hard or very soft mangoes.
Color:
- The color can vary depending on the mango variety. But in general, ripe mangoes have shades of red, yellow, or orange on their skin.
Appearance:
- Avoid blemishes and dark spots on the skin.
- Small brown freckles or speckles often called "mango blush" or lenticels indicate sweetness due to a high sugar content.
