Should you give popcorn to a dog?
No.
- Health and choking risks: Plain air-popped popcorn might seem fine for dogs, but it can still present multiple choking hazards. In addition, the popcorn kernels can get caught between teeth and may cause pain or infection. Even if you have carefully removed the kernels, excessive amounts of popcorn could lead to other digestive problems such as intestinal blockages.
- Salt: Flavored or even butter-flavored popcorn contains additional dangerous ingredients for your pup. Too much salt can cause excessive thirst, urination, and even sodium ion poisoning with vomiting, diarrhea, depression or tremors, seizures, and, in severe cases, death.
- Butter and oil: Some human popcorn is loaded with butter, margarine, or coconut oil. These ingredients are high in fat, which is not meant for a dog's digestive system. Too much fat can lead to pancreatitis and other health issues, including an upset stomach.
