The Potato Growth Cycle
1. Planting
* Potatoes are typically planted in the spring, after the last frost.
* The seed potatoes are planted about 2 inches deep and 12 inches apart.
* The soil should be well-drained and amended with compost or fertilizer.
2. Germination
* The seed potatoes will germinate in about 10 days.
* The first shoots will appear above the ground.
3. Vegetative Growth
* The potato plants will continue to grow vegetatively for about 6 weeks.
* During this time, they will produce leaves and stems.
4. Flowering
* The potato plants will begin to flower about 6 weeks after they emerge from the ground.
* The flowers are white or purple.
5. Fruiting
* The potato plants will produce fruit about 2 weeks after they flower.
* The fruit is a small, round berry that contains the potato seeds.
6. Maturity
* The potato plants will mature about 90 days after they are planted.
* The potatoes will be ready to harvest when the leaves of the plant start to turn brown.
7. Harvesting
* The potatoes can be harvested by digging them up with a shovel or potato fork.
* Be careful not to damage the potatoes when harvesting them.
8. Curing
* After harvesting, the potatoes should be cured for about 2 weeks.
* This will help to toughen the skin and prevent them from rotting.
9. Storage
* The potatoes can be stored in a cool, dark place for up to 6 months.
