What is the type of soil required for growing potatoes?

Potatoes grow best in sandy, light, loamy, or well-drained, fertile soils rich in organic matter with a pH range of 4.3 and 5.5. Avoid heavy clay soils with less aeration of air. The potato plants may do well initially but will later wilt or become stunted.
