Why horses eat chocolate?
Horses should never eat chocolate. Chocolate contains theobromine, which is toxic to horses. Theobromine is found in the cocoa beans used to make chocolate, and it can cause a variety of health problems in horses, including:
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Weight loss
- Dehydration
- Muscle tremors
- Seizures
- Heart problems
- Death
The amount of theobromine in chocolate varies depending on the type of chocolate. Dark chocolate contains more theobromine than milk chocolate or white chocolate. A small amount of chocolate may not be harmful to a horse, but it is best to avoid giving horses any chocolate at all.
If you believe that your horse has eaten chocolate, it is important to contact a veterinarian immediately. Treatment for chocolate poisoning will depend on the severity of the symptoms and may include:
- IV fluids
- Electrolyte replacement
- Medications to control vomiting and diarrhea
- Anticonvulsants
- Cardiac medications
Early treatment is essential for improving the chances of a full recovery.
