Where does halloumi cheese come from?
Halloumi cheese originates from Cyprus.
It's a semi-hard, brined cheese that's been a staple in Cypriot cuisine for centuries. While there are some variations made elsewhere, the true Cypriot halloumi is considered the original and is protected by a PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) label, meaning it must be made in Cyprus to be called "halloumi".
