How did sugarcane from the Caribbean end up in rum New England without major hardship?

Sugarcane from the Caribbean did not end up in New England without major hardship. The cultivation and production of sugarcane requires a warm climate, and therefore could not be grown in the New England region. Instead, the rum produced in New England was made from locally grown molasses, a byproduct of the sugarcane industry in the Caribbean. Molasses was imported from the Caribbean and used as a sweetener in the production of rum.
