Is Kosher salt heavier than salt?
This is a bit of a trick question! Here's why:
* Kosher salt is just a type of salt. It's made from the same mineral (sodium chloride) as table salt.
* The difference is in the grain size. Kosher salt has larger, irregular crystals, which make it good for koshering meat (drawing out moisture) and for finishing dishes.
* Density is the key: Density is how much mass is packed into a given volume. Since both kosher salt and table salt are made of the same material, their densities are very similar.
So, in terms of weight:
* A teaspoon of kosher salt will weigh slightly more than a teaspoon of table salt because the larger crystals take up more space.
* But if you have the same weight of both types of salt, they will be equal.
Therefore, kosher salt itself isn't heavier than salt. It just has a different grain size, which can make it seem heavier.
