Who was the first European to see Fiji and when did he it?
The first European to sight the islands of Fiji was the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman. He spotted Vanua Levu, one of the major islands of Fiji, in 1643, whilst on an expedition to explore the south Pacific Ocean region. Tasman named these group of islands Prince Wiliam's islands but today we know them as Fiji islands.
